Summary

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3。5/5Writing & atmosphere: so freaking beautiful。 However, I could not look beyond the sexism and objectification of women。 Also, its A LOT to take in and feel like i had to force myself to read more pages so that wasnt fun。

I couldn’t get through this book。 I liked the mystery about the book, but there was too much about men talking about women as sexual objects。 It wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test。 As an old woman who used to be a beautiful young woman, I got enough of being sexualized to last a lifetime and would rather read a book that doesn’t do that。 And then when I got to the part where a man abused his wife, I had had enough。

Definitely written by a man, I had trouble reading it because of the constant sexualization of all the women characters。

I adored this book。 The setting, the atmosphere, the writing, the story。 The physical copy I read was from the library and it was a paper back in rough shape。 It definitely has been read many, many times and I like to think that it engrossed every reader the way it did me。 This old, worn book was the perfect copy for a first read of me 。 There will definitely be future readings。 I return this book to the library this coming week and I will be purchasing my own copy for my library。

One of the most spectacular, transformational pieces of literature I've ever had the good fortune of coming across。 Zafon has stealthily entered my relatively immutable list of favourite authors。 A little too late。 One of the most spectacular, transformational pieces of literature I've ever had the good fortune of coming across。 Zafon has stealthily entered my relatively immutable list of favourite authors。 A little too late。 。。。more

Historical/ gothic fiction is not my usual genre, in fact I only read this book because it’s one my girlfriends favorites。 I’m used to reading sci-fi, fantasy or Tom Clancy style books that deal with the end of the world, or the fall of humanity。 With this book I’ve discovered that grand stages with huge implications for mankind do not always make a book a page turner。 With The Shadow of the Wind, the characters are so well developed and deliver so many amazing quotes (especially FRdT) that it d Historical/ gothic fiction is not my usual genre, in fact I only read this book because it’s one my girlfriends favorites。 I’m used to reading sci-fi, fantasy or Tom Clancy style books that deal with the end of the world, or the fall of humanity。 With this book I’ve discovered that grand stages with huge implications for mankind do not always make a book a page turner。 With The Shadow of the Wind, the characters are so well developed and deliver so many amazing quotes (especially FRdT) that it didn’t matter to me that this whole story only affected a handful of people。 An amazing read with shocks and twists that kept me thinking even after I put the book down before going to bed! 。。。more

3。5 stars, I didn’t like the way that it wrote about men, and there were parts where it was a little bit of a slog。 But it wasn’t bad! There were really lovely parts! But there were some parts that felt disorienting。 And i think it’s cool that there is a map of Barcelona at the end that walks you through different areas in the story。

I was definetly disappointed because I expected more。 The main problem is I couldn't get into the story and was totally not invested at all - especially the ark around the protagonist Daniel Sempere。 The part where Nuria is telling the story of Julian Carax was the strongest part imo and of course the idea of the story was good!I had also a MAJOR problem with the way women were portrayed and also the misogynist comments from Fermin that were portrayed as if they were funny。 I was definetly disappointed because I expected more。 The main problem is I couldn't get into the story and was totally not invested at all - especially the ark around the protagonist Daniel Sempere。 The part where Nuria is telling the story of Julian Carax was the strongest part imo and of course the idea of the story was good!I had also a MAJOR problem with the way women were portrayed and also the misogynist comments from Fermin that were portrayed as if they were funny。 。。。more

2。5 StarsThis book told a fun story, and the structure of it was impressive in several ways。 However, despite how well it gets tied up in the end, I am extremely irked by the treatment of women in this book。 All the women in this book were treated atrociously。 Either a woman has almost no agency, or she meets some kind of violent end (or both)。 The women who do have agency spend the entire book talking about or to men (despite having 2+ women in this book, it would not pass the Bechdel test, no 2。5 StarsThis book told a fun story, and the structure of it was impressive in several ways。 However, despite how well it gets tied up in the end, I am extremely irked by the treatment of women in this book。 All the women in this book were treated atrociously。 Either a woman has almost no agency, or she meets some kind of violent end (or both)。 The women who do have agency spend the entire book talking about or to men (despite having 2+ women in this book, it would not pass the Bechdel test, no no) and otherwise women are all sweepingly treated as property, sexual objects, servants, or a combination thereof。 The dialogue and thoughts of the male characters were often gross and uncomfortable to read。I get that there is an element of ~time period~ here, the book spanning the 20s to the 50s approximately, but women still have lives and feelings? Why was none of that explored? Even the protagonist and the main characters who we are meant to like (all of them men) are constantly objectifying women or belittling them。 This book was published in 2005, not 1950, idfc if that was 16 years ago, this was NOT good enough。 This is not even approaching the fact that the love story in this book is ridiculously rushed, and the chemistry never really apparent or explained。 No lead up。 Just "oh I saw her。 Now I love her"。 ????Ok ????? why???ALSO ALSO the first twist (view spoiler)[(incest) (hide spoiler)] was out of nowhere, and while it was surprising it didn't feel well planted in the story。 The second twist (view spoiler)[(Julian is creepy guy) (hide spoiler)] was OBVIOUS and overdrawn。 The "twist" at the end was a big meh。 If this book had been less shite to literally all the women in it (yes, even the ones who end up happy) it would have been 4 or 5 stars。 。。。more

’this place is a mystery, a sanctuary。 every book, every volume you see here has a soul。 the soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it —as i walked on the first few steps of the cemetery of the forgotten books alongside daniel, i felt as though i was entering some sort of enchantment, like walking into a dream。 the writing absorbed me, and just like that- i fell in love。i felt like i was also the child of a bookseller in barcelona, 1945– watching ’this place is a mystery, a sanctuary。 every book, every volume you see here has a soul。 the soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it —as i walked on the first few steps of the cemetery of the forgotten books alongside daniel, i felt as though i was entering some sort of enchantment, like walking into a dream。 the writing absorbed me, and just like that- i fell in love。i felt like i was also the child of a bookseller in barcelona, 1945– watching a dark, haunting mystery unfold through rose-colored glasses。 zafon’s set-up felt like revisiting the magic of story-telling and words through the lens of a child with the understanding of an adult。 it felt comfortable and inviting, but at the same time it captures you and creeps on you。 makes me wish i understand spanish just so i could read the original writing。i was excited to get to know each character, and how julian carax’s the shadow of the wind tied them all up together。 though, sadly this part is not without critic for me— with full consideration of the time this was written and the time its representing, i was still sad to see the portrayal of female characters in this story, i still adore them! but other than reading them through the male gaze, sometimes it seems like they were only there for a sort of- stepping stone for the male characters development。also- i have to say, though the story started off with a slow pace, it does have parts where it was a bit rushed and the readers were thrown around to meet a dozen characters and learn their history all at once, and all of a sudden the pacing turns slow again。 this and the switching of the dialogue can make the story a bit confusing to follow, and there were times i had to dial back a page or more。i would have loved to see more of the cemetery— like, who was allowed inside and how did it came to be? hell, i even want to know the history of the keeper, isaac monfort。 because truthfully, the description of the wonders in the place was what implored me to stay in the story。 but i know that the shadow of the wind was the focus, and i still (almost) equally enjoyed seeing that as well。other than that, i loved my visit and the people i met along the way。 it was delightful and if i could read it for the first time again, i would gladly walk up the steps of the cemetery of the forgotten books once more。 — every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens。 in this place, books no longer remembered by anyone, books that are lost in time, live forever。 。 。’★★★★☆4 stars 。。。more

Really enjoyed this, is was mediocre up until the halfway point then, after that, it was really great BUT, the ending and the setting really won me over to be honest! Not quite a five star feeling, but wonderful nonetheless。

OMG, definitely a new favorite! This book has taught me a lot about love and happiness。 In this day and age, we try to find our happiness in social media or we go and look for it across the rainbow, we don't pay attention to what is in front of us。 This book has taught me where to find happiness and love, how to give love, and how to receive love。 If you are on a journey of self discovery (READ THIS BOOK), if you want a beautiful mystery/romance(READ THIS BOOK), if you want a heartwarming book ( OMG, definitely a new favorite! Barcelona of the early- to mid-twentieth century is conjured back to life via Zafon's considerable literary gifts。 Mysteries are wrapped around enigmas as young Daniel Sempere, having selected the last novel of Julian Carax--The Shadow of the Wind--from the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, is drawn into multiple intrigues and danger when he seeks to discover who is hunting down and destroying every copy of Carax's written legacy。 My friend, Keith Morgan, recommended this years ago; as usual, he was Barcelona of the early- to mid-twentieth century is conjured back to life via Zafon's considerable literary gifts。 Mysteries are wrapped around enigmas as young Daniel Sempere, having selected the last novel of Julian Carax--The Shadow of the Wind--from the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, is drawn into multiple intrigues and danger when he seeks to discover who is hunting down and destroying every copy of Carax's written legacy。 My friend, Keith Morgan, recommended this years ago; as usual, he was right。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I found this a bit of a chore to read at times and difficult to get into so I don’t think I would read any more in the series’s。 But the story was interesting and beautiful and the characters were well developed。。。 I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Daniel and Fermin and the character of Fermin in particular。
